This has been a year of growth and opportunity for the Diaper Bank that exceeded our wildest expectations.
When we moved out of my garage in October 2015 we thought we might be able to keep the shelves in our donated home at the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry full enough to serve 600 children each month. Not only did you keep our shelves full, through your contributions we are serving 1,200 children each month with 30,000 diapers distributed through 10 partner organizations. In fact, our shelves were so full that we had to find a new home. Last month we moved into larger warehouse and office space – a move made possible by the generous gift of one donor (who is also a hard-working volunteer!).
Your donations aren’t just putting diapers on a shelf in our warehouse, they are making real and lasting impacts in the lives of families in 68 zip codes across the metro area.
Families in every corner of our region are benefitting from your generosity – each month our diapers are helping families find room in their budgets to afford utility bills that will keep the lights on, afford the medicine their children need to stay healthy, get the jackets and winter coats little ones need to stay warm, put healthy meals on the table, and even make it possible for families to put aside money each month for emergencies. Diapers are especially impactful in the lives of the 40% of our diaper recipients who earn less than $500 each month.
Here at the Diaper Bank we like to think of diapers as a "gateway resource." When we provide diapers to our partner organizations we not only meet the basic needs of their clients, we support and enhance our partners’ mission related work and open the door for families to receive the other services they need. As the only agency in the region solely focused on providing diapers, the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank, with your help, is making St. Louis families and St. Louis organizations stronger. Despite our huge growth this year we still aren’t even coming close to meeting the need in our region – in St. Louis City alone there are nearly 3,500 families who need our diapers that we aren’t yet reaching.
